Pendulum Case Study
Website with Document Workflow and Approval Process
The Client
A Richmond area not-for-profit Center with an educational,
historical objective.
The Business Need
The client wanted a means of interacting with the public in order
to further a collaboration of information between the Center and the
general audience. The ultimate solution would have to be accessible
to a wide audience, allow for the resulting exchange of ideas to be
public, and allow the client authorization to keep the exchange on topic
and free from profanity or potentially liable text.
The Solution
Pendulum, Inc. was hired to build a website for the client that would
incorporate all of their requirements. We built a website with a database
backend that allows users to register for and log onto the site with a
username and password as proper authentication.
After logging in, a user has the ability to add commentary pertaining
to the website's subject matter that is potentially available to all
public users of the site. In order to maintain administrative control,
the username authentication on the site is role-based allowing Center
employees to login and perform functions not available to publicly
registered usrs. One of those functions is viewing all submitted
commentary from public users. With the click of a button the
administrative users have the ability to reject the submission or
accept the submission for public display. Once a decision is made,
an email is automatically sent to the author and the commentary is
instantaneously routed to the proper location.
In addition to commentary control, administrative users also have
the ability to maintain dynamic content on the site such as Center
events and staff listings. This is done through administrative web
pages and requires absolutely no coding (not even HTML).
Benefits
As a result of this solution, the client is able to keep track of
submitted commentary through an easy to use interface that is available
anywhere there is an Internet connection. In addition, dynamic content
can easily be maintained on the website without the added expense and
time of programmer hours. The client's users benefit by having a robust,
informative website from which to further enhance their education
on the subject.
Technology Used
This website was built using ASP.NET and SQL Server 2000 on a
remotely hosted Internet Information Services server. The design
elements of the site were created by
on enterFrame
and seamlessly integrated into the final solution as a collaborative
effort between on enterFrame and Pendulum.
